2bit.pics is a small, free site run by one person. These terms say what it is, what we each owe the other, and what happens if it stops.

2bit.pics is operated by Alex Akers (“we”, “us”). Using the site means you accept these terms. If you don’t, don’t use it. Questions go to hi@2bit.pics.
2bit.pics is an interface to the AT Protocol network — the same open network behind Bluesky. It is not the home of your account or your posts. When you post a photo, that photo is written as a record to your repository on your provider (your PDS), and we read it back from the network to display it here.
That arrangement is the good part — your account is portable and your photos aren’t hostage to this site — but it shapes everything below. We can control what 2bit.pics shows. We can’t control what your provider stores or what other apps on the network do with records you’ve published.
You need your own AT Protocol account to sign in, and you get one from a provider that isn’t us. Your relationship with that provider is governed by their terms, not these.
You sign in through OAuth, so we never see your password. Keep control of your account: anything done through it is treated as done by you.
You must be at least 13 years old to use 2bit.pics, and old enough to agree to these terms where you live.
You keep every right you have in what you post. We claim no ownership over your photos.
What you do give us is permission to run the site: to fetch, store, process, cache, and display the records you publish, including the parts that are obviously necessary — dithering an upload to the four-shade format before it’s saved, generating the preview image that appears when someone shares a link to your photo, and showing your work in feeds, profiles, and search on 2bit.pics. That permission lasts as long as the records are public on the network and ends when you delete them, allowing for caches and shared link previews to expire.
Understand that records you publish to the AT Protocol network are public by design. Anyone can read them, including services with no connection to 2bit.pics. Don’t post anything here you wouldn’t publish openly.
The Guidelines are part of these terms. Beyond them: don’t attack the service or try to break into it, don’t scrape it in a way that degrades it for everyone else, and don’t use it to break the law.
We can hide content and stop serving accounts that break the Guidelines or these terms, with or without notice, at our discretion. As above, that removes things from 2bit.pics only — your records stay in your repository and remain visible to the rest of the network until you delete them.
You can stop using the site whenever you like. Just sign out.
2bit.pics costs nothing and comes with no promises about availability. It may be slow, broken, changed, or shut down entirely. Features may disappear. We’ll try to give notice before shutting it down, but we don’t guarantee it.
To the fullest extent the law allows, the service is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. We don’t warrant that the site will be uninterrupted, secure, or error-free, or that anything you post here is preserved anywhere. Keep your own copies of photos you care about.
2bit.pics depends on services we don’t run: your PDS provider, the AT Protocol network and its indexing services, and our hosting provider. We aren’t responsible for what they do, for outages or data loss on their side, or for what other people post and do on the network.
To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for lost profits, data, or goodwill, arising out of your use of 2bit.pics. Some jurisdictions don’t allow these exclusions, in which case they apply to you only as far as that law permits.
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of California, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules. Any dispute arising out of these terms or out of your use of 2bit.pics will be brought in the state or federal courts located in Santa Clara County, California, and we each agree to those courts hearing it.
If you’re a consumer somewhere whose law gives you rights you can’t sign away — much of the EU and the UK among them — nothing here takes those away, and this section applies only as far as your local law allows.
These terms will change as the site does. When they change in a way that matters, the date at the top of this page moves and we’ll note it on the site. Continuing to use 2bit.pics after that means you accept the new terms.
